Using the vehicle of a life confession made by an elderly sister of The Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy, this feature film by Jerzy Łukaszewicz tells the story of St. Faustina’s everyday life, rendered beautiful, worthwhile and fascinating through her union with God.
Because of the credibility of the title role played by Dorota Segda, alongside other great actors in their various roles, and aided as well by beautiful pictures and the excellent music of Jerzy Kilar, we are able to enter into the world of the greatest mystic of our times, who discovered God in her own soul and in this closeness walked the way of her difficult everyday life. Her child-like trust in God and the goodness she showed to others on every occasion, made her outwardly prosaic life very beautiful and abundantly fruitful in the life of the Church. The film skilfully combines historical and fictional threads, portraying the everyday life of a nun whose spirituality reached the heights of mysticism. The film, produced by TVP, was released in 1992, won an award at the Film Festival in Gdańsk, and enjoyed remarkable popularity.

This film, produced on the basis of documentary texts, describes in artistic form the prophetic mission of St. Faustina, interwoven with the history of the world. “The Prophet of Mercy” is a film version of the play by Agnieszka Mandat and Mieczysław Grąbka with the music of Norbert Blacha, which premiered on the stage of the Ludwik Solski State Drama School in Kraków, on the hundredth anniversary of the birth of St. Faustina, 25 August 2005. The play, based on Sister Faustina Kowalska’s “Diary” and “Letters” and on the memories of witnesses to her life, presents St. Faustina in 15 scenes as a prophet of our time, giving to the world the message of the merciful love of God to man. Prominent actors attached to Kraków theatres take part in this film, as also professors and students of the State Drama School. Bishop Jan Zając, Rector of the Łagiewniki Shrine, was patron of this work. The film version, produced by Stanisław Zajączkowski and Krzysztof Stawowczyk, enriches the original production with additional visual effects, especially close-ups of actors’ faces, thus further enhancing the whole atmosphere of the play. This allows one to accompany the Prophet of our times in her life struggles and presents evocatively the message of Mercy, which is a gift from God. In the closing scenes of the film, we see the Holy Father John Paul II relaying this message to the world, because – as he maintained – in it the world will find peace and man happiness. The DVD with the film version of the play “The Prophet of Mercy” was prepared by the Ludwik Solski State Drama School in Kraków and “Misericordia” Publishing House, thanks to sponsoring of the work by the company “Skalski Sp. z o.o.”

This film, being in the nature of a report, is primarily a presentation on how the lives of people today have been affected by the message of The Divine Mercy given by St. Faustina. The testimonies of many people, young and old, confirm the greatness of this ‘gift of God for our time’, as the life and the prophetic mission of St. Faustina have come to be called. Sisters from the Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy and from the Congregation of Merciful Jesus took part in the production of the film. It is very easy viewing for all, including the youth, and is available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Slovak and Russian. It was presented, among other occasions, at the World Youth Day in Sydney.
