Chronology

Founding of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland by Mother Teresa, Ewa Countess Potocki of the Sułkowski princes. Consecration by Archbishop Zygmunt Szczęsny Feliński of the house and chapel in the convent in Żytnia Street, Warsaw.

Founding of the Congregation House in Kraków with Mother Kunegunda Kłobukowska elected as the first Superior.

the Sacred Congregation of Bishops and Regulars issues the decree of approval (decretum laudis) for the combined Congregations of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy from France (Laval) and Poland. From that time the houses of the Congregation in Poland are subject to the Superior General in Laval. The foundress, Mother Teresa Potocka, elected as the first Vicar General for the houses in Poland.

Death of the foundress Mother Teresa Potocka in Wilanów, followed by her burial in Warsaw Powązki Cemetery (Avenue T).

Opening of the House in Derdy (donated by Count Gustaw Przeździecki) with Mother Aniela Popławska elected as the first Superior.

Acquisition of the farm property in Walendów (donated by Count Gustaw Przeździecki).

Opening of the Warsaw branch House in Ksawerów.

The “Divine Love” institute, which ran the Guardian Angel Institution (Zakład Anioła Stróża) in Płock, merges with the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Mother Kolumba Łabanowska elected as the first superior of the House in Płock.

The Congregation takes over the running of the orphanage in Częstochowa, that is to say the “Orphanage named after the late Oskar Count Tyszkiewicz and dedicated to St. Kazimierz”. This led to the opening of the House of Mercy in St. Barbara Street, Częstochowa (15 October 1908).

Opening of the religious House in Żytomierz at the invitation of Reverend Feliks Sznarbachowski. Mother Kolumba Łabanowska elected as Superior.

Founding of the convent in Vilnius on Antokol. The Foundation of the Princess Mary Michałowa Radziwiłł. Mother Aniela Popławska elected as the first Superior.

Closedown of the religious House in Żytomierz.

Opening of the religious House in Przemyśl at the invitation of Reverend Jan Balicki. Mother Mechtylda Beym elected as Superior.

Closedown of the branch House in Ksawerów.

On the initiative of Reverend Paweł Kubicki, rector of the Seminary in Sandomierz and later Suffragan Bishop of Sandomierz, the religious House is founded in Radom. Mother Serafina Kukulska elected as the first Superior.

The running of the institution for girls in Przemyśl is handed over to the sisters of the Congregation of Divine Providence.

Arrival of the sisters at Kalisz at the invitation of Reverend Stefan Martuzalski, who in December 1922 bought a villa with a small garden for the sisters and their work, in Poznańska Street, and later founded the building for apostolic work.

Issuing of the Decree of the Sacred Congregation for Religious Affairs on the official separation from the Congregation in Laval and return to full autonomy of the convents of the Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy in Poland.

– The first General Chapter, convened by Father Emanuel Trzemeski (a Redemptorist), the inspector for the Holy See, chooses Mother Leonarda Cielecka to be the first Superior General of the Congregation.

Helena Kowalska, Sr. Faustina, joins the Congregation.

Purchase of a two-hectare estate on the outskirts of Warsaw in the district of Grochów, for the construction of a holiday home for the sisters and the girls – a branch of the convent in Żytnia Street, Warsaw. Since 1942 this has been running as an independent convent. Mother Ksawera Olszamowska elected as the first Superior.

Opening in Rabka of a branch of the Kraków convent. Since 1946 this has been an independent religious House with Sister Felicja Żakowiecka elected as the first Superior.

Following the Polish Houses’ official separation from the Congregation in Laval, the Congregation for Religious Affairs approves, for a period of seven years, the new Constitutions of the Congregation adapted to conditions in Poland.

The sisters arrive at Kiekrz (Poznań) at the invitation of the “Przystań” Society and of its mentor Reverend Can. Walenty Dymek, later Archbishop of Poznań. Mother Ksawera Olszamowska elected as the first Superior.

The second General Chapter, during which Mother Michaela Moraczewska is elected Superior General.

The branch of the Płock House is opened in Biała. Since 1950 it has run as an independent convent with Sister Melania Biasion elected the first Superior.

Ten hectares of arable land are purchased in Cerekwia, for the establishment of the Branch House of Radom.

Revelation of Jesus the Merciful to Sister Faustina in Płock and His call to paint His image according to the vision and to establish in the whole Church the Feast of The Divine Mercy. The beginning of the prophetic mission of St. Sister Faustina.

On the initiative of Archbishop Romuald Jałbrzykowski the sisters lease the former estate of the Basilians in Supraśl. The sisters take care of 250 children after the great flood in the Małopolska region. This property is run as a branch of the Vilnius House.

The Holy See finally approves the Constitutions of the Congregation.

The Congregation withdraws from the work in Supraśl.

Sister Faustina in Vilnius receives revelations connected with establishing of “a new congregation,” or the Apostolic Movement of The Divine Mercy.

In the House of the Congregation in Vilnius, the Chaplet of The Divine Mercy is revealed to Sister Faustina.

Act of the election of Our Lady of Mercy for the heavenly superior general of the Congregation. Mother Michaela Moraczewska is the Superior General of the Congregation at this time.

The revelation in the Kraków convent of the prayer called the Hour of Mercy, to be offered at the time of Jesus’ dying on the Cross.

At the request of the Society for the Protection of Young Women the Congregation takes up working in St. Catherine’s Shelter in Brzuchowice near Lvov, which is then moved to the city of Lvov. Sister Pelagia Chabowska is the Superior.

Death of Sister Faustina Kowalska at the Kraków convent. She is buried in a tomb in the convent cemetery in Kraków-Łagiewniki.

Beginning of the work in Bieńczyce – branch of the Kraków House.

Opening of the House in Radość, a branch of the Warsaw House.

The Congregation acquires the Foundation “Orphanage in Pobiedrze named after the late Ludwika Żeleńska nee Wężykowa” (District Wadowice) with sister Rita Ruchlewicz elected as Superior.

The Houses in Bieńczyce and in Radość are closed down.

The sisters of the Vilnius House, as forced repatriates, settle in Gdańsk, with sister Andrzeja Wojcik elected the first Superior.

The sisters of the Lvov House, as forced repatriates, settle in Krzeptówki in Zakopane. Sister Pelagia Chabowska elected as the first Superior.

The Sisters take responsibility for the House of German women deacons in Świebodzice and open a nursery and folk kitchen there.

The taking over of the convent and the establishment in Wrocław from the German Sisters of the Good Shepherd. Mother Irena Krzyżanowska elected as the first Superior.

The institution in Świebodzice is transferred to the Sisters of the Congregation of the Resurrection.

The sisters withdraw from the apostolic work in Pobiedrze and close down the religious House there.

The farm in Cerekwia (the branch of the Radom House) is taken over by the Communist State Treasury.

Act of dedicating the Congregation to The Divine Mercy. Mother Aleksandra Archita is the Superior General at this time.

At the invitation of the Warsaw Provincial Department of Health and Welfare, the sisters undertake work at the Special National Institute for mentally ill women in Bramki Ludne. Initially this is run as a branch of the Walendów convent. From 29 September 1962 this has been an independent religious House with sister Augustyna Wadas elected as its Superior.

The communist government gradually closes down the institutions for girls in need of moral renewal. Other Mercy Houses are converted to care institutions for sick women, and children with impaired mental and psycho-motor abilities.

In the Metropolitan Curia in Kraków, the opening of the informational process, on the life and virtues of the Servant of God – Sister Faustina Kowalska; this takes place under Bishop Julian Groblicki, as appointed by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła.

The mortal remains of Sister Faustina Kowalska are transferred from the cemetery to the convent chapel in Kraków.

Cardinal Karol Wojtyła completes the informational process on the life and virtues of the Servant of God Sister Faustina Kowalska, at the level of the diocese. The case files are submitted to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.

Resignation from the work in Bramki Ludne.

– Opening of the religious House in Magdalenka. Sister Gabriela Bejma elected as the first Superior.

Opening of the religious House in Rome (in the Czech College) to aid the efficient conduct of the process of beatification of Sister Faustina. Sister Loyola Czermak elected as the first Superior.

The first edition of the “Diary” of Sister Faustina Kowalska.

Opening of the religious House in Lódź at the invitation of Rev. Tadeusza Bednarek, parish priest. Sister Magdalena Jońca elected as the first sister performing the duties of the Superior.

Approval by the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes of the new Constitutions of the Congregation prepared under the guidance of the Second Vatican Council.

the first issue of the “Orędzia Miłosierdzia” (The Message of Mercy) is issued on the initiative of Father Wojciech Kubacki SI. Since 1996, this periodical, edited by Sister Elżbieta Siepak, has been issued every quarter as the official publication of the “Faustinum” Association of the Apostles of The Divine Mercy.

Opening of the religious House in Chyliczki. Sister Irena Garbiec elected the first Superior.

Departure to the U.S. at the invitation of Cardinal Law, and the opening of the religious House in Boston with Sister Rajmunda Paciura elected as the first Superior.

The Congregation has been recovering the convents and establishments previously taken by the communist authorities, among others: the House of Mercy and a section of the property in Kraków; the convent and the “Guardian Angel” institution (Zakład Anioła Stróża) in Płock.

Opening of the religious House in Belarus – in Szydłowice. Sister Konsolata Łanik elected as the first Superior.

Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, Archbishop of Kraków, issues the decree establishing a convent chapel of St. Joseph in the Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Kraków-Łagiewniki.

Beatification of Sister Faustina by the Holy Father John Paul II in St. Peter's Square, Rome.

Opening of the religious House in Rome, in the Via dei Penitenzieri: Centre for the Apostolate of The Divine Mercy. Sister Aniela Radlica elected as the first Superior.

Opening of the religious House in Ronov in the Czech Republic. Later the Community moved to Dvůr Králové nad Labem, with sister Gracjana Szewc elected as the first Superior.

The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments issues the decree authorizing the inclusion of the then Blessed Sister Faustina in the liturgical calendar of the Church in Poland.

The act of recognition of Blessed Sister Faustina as a spiritual co-founder of the Congregation. The Superior General at this time is Mother Paulina Słomka.

February 22-24, 1996
1^st International Congress of Apostles of Divine Mercy at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Cracow-Łagiewniki. Theme: Apostolic Movement of Divine Mercy.

Cardinal Franciszek Macharski, Archbishop of Kraków, establishes the “Faustinum” Association of the Apostles of The Divine Mercy at the request of Mother Paulina Słomka, the Superior General of the Congregation. Sister Elżbieta Siepak elected as the first President of the “Faustinum” Association.

The first papal pilgrimage of the Holy Father John Paul II to the Shrine in Łagiewniki. The Pope’s prayer before the miraculous image of Merciful Jesus and the tomb of Bl. Sister Faustina, and a meeting with the sisters of the Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy, to whom he said: “Dear Sisters! An extraordinary vocation is yours. Choosing from among you Blessed Faustina, Christ has made your Congregation the guardian of this place, and at the same time he has called you to a particular apostolate, that of his Mercy. I ask you: accept this responsibility! The people of today need your proclamation of mercy: they need your works of mercy and they need your prayer to obtain mercy. Do not neglect any of these dimensions of the apostolate.”

Opening of the religious House in Kazakhstan – Petropavlovsk, at the invitation of Bishop Tomasz Peta. This was done in thanksgiving for the visit of the Holy Father John Paul II to the Shrine in Łagiewniki. Sister Maria Magdalena Glumińska elected as the first Superior.

Resignation of the apostolic work in Magdalenka and closedown of the religious House.

The Canonization of Sister Faustina by Pope John Paul II in Rome. Simultaneous TV coverage with the Shrine in Kraków-Łagiewniki. The announcement of the Feast of The Divine Mercy for the whole Church.

The chapel in the Płock convent is raised by Bishop Stanisław Wielgus to the rank of the Diocesan Shrine of The Divine Mercy.

Closedown of the religious House in Via Concordia in Rome (the Czech College).

Opening of the religious House in Jerusalem at the invitation of Father Jerzy Kraja, Franciscan, the Superior of the Franciscan Monastery of the Flagellation. Sister Weronika Trojanowska appointed the first Superior.

Opening of the second religious House in Belarus in Postawy, at the invitation of Bishop Władysław Blin. Sister Klaudia Zaleska elected as the first Superior.

Opening of the religious House in Świnice Warckie. Sister Mirosława Ratter elected as the first Superior.

The second pilgrimage of the Holy Father John Paul II to the Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Kraków-Łagiewniki. The consecration of the newly built basilica and the act of entrusting the world to The Divine Mercy.

Mother Gracjana Szewc, the Superior General, establishes the “Misericordia” Publishing House. Sister Elżbieta Siepak elected as the first director.

The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has approved the Congregation’s own Calendar with the celebration for the patronal feast of the Congregation (5 August) and with the feast of St. Faustina the Virgin (5 October) – such feasts being reserved for holy founders.

At the invitation of Cardinal Miloslav Vlk, the opening of the religious House in Prague as a branch of the Dvur Kralove House (the second House in the Czech Republic). From 31 August 2005 has been an independent House with sister Martyna Dudek elected as the first Superior.

Unveiling of the memorial plaque in honor of Congregation’s Foundress Mother Teresa Eva Sułkowska Countess Potocka (of the Sułkowski princes) at the Church of St. Anne in Wilanów. Warsaw. The plaque commemorates the stay and prayer of the Foundress in Wilanów, as well as the first requiem Mass that was celebrated there beside the Foundress coffin. Joseph Cardinal Glemp former Primate of Poland celebrated Mass and unveiled the plaque. Also on this day, the gravesite of the Congregation in Powązki, Warsaw was blessed after thorough renovation. The mortal remains of Mother Teresa Potocka as well as close to 90 sisters rest there.

150^th Anniversary of the Establishment and Work of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy. Metropolitan Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz was the main celebrant of the grand jubilee celebration in Warsaw on Żytnia Street. During the celebration at the Parish Church of Divine Mercy and St. Faustina (former Chapel of the Congregation), the Cardinal blessed the memorial tablet commemorating the time when Mother Teresa Potocka, Foundress of the Congregation, and S. Faustina Kowalska, Spiritual Co-Foundress stayed in this place. Also on the occasion of this special day, Holy Mass at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Cracow-Łagiewniki was celebrated and broadcasted by TVP with Bishop Jan Zając presiding.

Congregation’s Jubilee Pilgrimage to Rydzyna – place where Foundress Mother Teresa, from the princely line of the Sułkowskis and Potockis, spent her youth and childhood. The Metropolitan Archbishop of Poznań Stanislaus Gądecki was the main celebrant of the solemn Jubilee Mass. About 300 sisters, priests, wards of the Congregation’s center for girls, Faustinum members and invited guests participated.

In 2000, at this site of historic revelations St. Faustina had in the convent, the Diocesan Shrine of Divine Mercy was established by Bp. Stanisław Wielgus.

The XVII General Chapter starts in Derdy. On 12 May, the General Superior M. Petra M. Kowalczyk is entrusted the service for a second term. Sister M. Gracjana Szewc is elected Vicaress General. The following Sisters are elected to the General Council: Sr. Agnieszka Piechnik, Sr. Miriam Janiec and Sr. Natalia Wideł. The office of the General Treasurer is held for the next six years by Sr. Benedykta Stefaniak. 

26-31 July 2016
World Youth Day in Krakow. The patrons of WYD were St. Faustina and St. John Paul II. Before the meeting in Krakow, young people from 187 countries visited various dioceses, and during the WYD they come to the Łagiewniki Shrine of Divine Mercy to pray at the grace-famous image of Merciful Jesus and the tomb of the Apostle of Divine Mercy.

On this day, Sr. M. Donata Farbaniec, and Sr. M. Guide Skass go to the USA to start a permanent ministry at the National Shrine of St. John Paul II in Washington. Sister. M. Donata Farbaniec becomes the first Superior.

18 July 2017
Three sisters: Sr. Solange Pereira (a Brazilian, who served in Poland for 20 years) as Superior, Sr. Christofora Jagla, and Sr. Hieronima Kuta go to Rio de Janeiro to set up a new house of the Congregation in Brazil and start a permanent ministry there to proclaim the message of Mercy by deed, word and prayer.

Bishop Rafał Markowski consecrates the Church of Divine Mercy and St. Faustina in Warsaw at Żytnia Street and reads the decree from Kazimierz Cardinal Nycz on the establishment of this church as a Shrine of Sister Faustina. Until the Warsaw Uprising (1944), the church was the chapel of the house of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy.

At the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Krakow-Łagiewniki, at the tomb of St. Faustina, Ottavio Vitale, R.C.I, Bishop of the Diocese of Lezhë in Albania, grants ordination to diacon Michał Adam Nowak of the Rogationists of the Heart of Jesus on the anniversary of St. Faustina’s perpetual vows.

Completion of the 15 years of ministry (2002-2017) by the Congregation in Jerusalem, at the Collegium Biblicum Franciscanum at Via Dolorosa in the Old Town and the Shrine of the Flagellation of the Lord Jesus. At that time, the Sisters published the Diary of St. Faustina in Arabic, in addition to minor publications, and they organized celebrations in honor of Divine Mercy and St. Faustina in Jerusalem, prayed for the Mercy of God in the Holy Land and the whole world.

16 September 2017
Bishop Marek Marczak consecrates a new convent of the Congregation in Lodz, at Krośnieńska street. In this house, owned by her uncle Rapacki, Helena Kowalska—future St. Faustina—lived at the turn of 1922/1923. A chapel is established on the ground floor, in the apartment. Sister Benedetta Flak becomes the first Superior of the new community of the Congregation.

Centenary of the apostolic ministry of the Congregation in Radom’s Church of Our Lady of Mercy, with the participation of Bishop Henryk Tomasik, the head of the Radom Diocese, many priests and residents of the city. After Holy Mass, a conference entitled “100 years of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Radom” takes place.

Activity launched in a newly built catering and trade pavilion for pilgrims, the so-called “Green Passage”, which houses the Home of St. Faustina Restaurant, gift shops and the “Misericordia” publishing establishment.

December 2017
Just before Christmas, renovation of the convent at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Krakow-Łagiewniki, which lasted for several years, is completed. With the support of the Department of Culture and National Heritage of the City of Krakow, the Social Committee for the Restoration of Monuments of Krakow, the Church Fund, Donors, and the Congregation itself, all the exterior walls of the convent buildings regained their original beauty after more than 120 years.

22 March 2018
Completion of the renovation of the convent chapel of the grace-famous image of Merciful Jesus and the tomb of St. Faustina. New electrical installations, sound system, security system are installed, along with illumination and restoration of all altars, paintings, statues and wall paintings.

150th anniversary of the Congregation in Krakow. Holy Mass in the Church of Divine Mercy at Smoleńsk Street (the first house of the Congregation). On May 19, celebration is held at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Krakow-Łagiewniki with the participation of Archbishop Edward Nowak from the Vatican, many priests, parents of Poland’s President Andrzej Duda, the city authorities with the City President, Prof. Jacek Majchrowski, district authorities, representatives of the Ministry, the Board of Education, municipal services, benefactors, donors and friends of the Congregation. A scientific session entitled “From mercy to Mercy” is held with a book publication, Holy Mass presided over by Bishop Jan Zając. Lunch and a special arts program follow.

Broadcast of the prayer at the Hour of Mercy and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy from the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Krakow-Łagiewniki is launched by the first foreign TV station (from Italy), which uses the on-line stream from www.faustyna.pl. Since January 1, 2018, full on-line transmission has been available on cable television in Poland, and since 2013—from 11 radio stations in Poland and the USA. The video stream is also available in the Faustyna.pl application for Android (since April 2016) and iOS (since October 2017).
